i2020 Summit Theme:
The Power of Connection, Relational Health and Unrecognized Depression in AYA Males
Background and Summit Agenda
Background – 2018 National Summit on Adolescent and Young Adult Male Health
In June of 2018 over 100 national leaders from a range of interests and disciplines met in Washington DC to participate in the first National Summit on Adolescent and Young Adult Male Health. The summit was planned with advice and input from over 40 national organizations that serve male youth.
The summit was held to begin laying the groundwork for collaborative efforts to advance adolescent and young adult (AYA) male health. This marked the first time that stakeholders from disparate interests and disciplines convened in a national forum to discuss how they can work together, through PMY, to ensure that young males thrive physically, mentally and in their life goals.
2020 National Summit
The purpose of the December 10, 2020 virtual summit is to build upon the 2018 summit by identifying specific initiatives that participating organizations can take to address the mental health needs of AYA males. The specific subject matter focus will be undiagnosed/unrecognized depression among AYA males and the impact of that condition on anxiety, substance use and other disorders. As a prelude to the summit, PMY commissioned a literature review on the subject that PMY issued in early October. The purpose of the review is to serve as a foundation for discussion during the summit. Finally, in early 2021 PMY will issue a report on the 2020 summit proceedings.
PMY also plans that this 2020 summit process can serve as a model for similar efforts focusing on other AYA male health areas, all of which, combined, would result in a report on the state of AYA male health in the US. The principal outcome of the 2020 summit will be a collaborative action agenda, including commitments by summit participants and others to work on its behalf.
